cool green skin care tricks

Every time I buy a new skin care product I make sure it does not contain harmful chemicals. But some things are very hard to find without any of that. So I learned a couple of tricks on how to avoid harmful substances without compromising my style:

Instead of hairspray or gel try to apply plain aloe vera gel. Works just great!

In the morning, slap a spoonful of plain organic yogurt on your face. Excellent moisturizer and you know exactly what's in it.

First Green Birthday!

Our baby Max turned 1 this summer and although we decided not to have a party we ended up having a bunch of friends and children over who just wanted to wish the little guy a happy birthday. There were no plastic desposable tableware or paper napkins!

It's been a very good educational year for us. His allergies and skin conditions improved significantly thanks to balanced wholesome food and organic baby skin care. Looking back over the past year I realize how much my life changed. We became a lot more aware of environmental problems, the benefits of organic life style, toxic waste and plastic overuse around us. Like many of our "green" friends I only want to say - I wish I made the change sooner!

the turning point - what was yours?

It's different for everyone... For us it was the birth of our second child - Maximus, that made us realize that unless we reconsider our way of living, we are going to destroy our world in no time!
Max was born with a full set of allergies and a very sensitive skin. Even the most gentle baby cream would trigger a severe eczema that would last for weeks. To keep it under control, we had to apply steroid cream on him several times a day. I hated the idea of putting stuff on my baby's skin the name of which I could not even pronounce! While searching the web for more natural alternatives we have learned a lot about different chemicals that are present in most non-organic or natural skin care products. We have learned that many of them are really bad for you and can cause deseases like cancer.
After we switched to natural skin care products for our son, we saw the difference after just a few hours! His skin cleared almost completely now.
This little change made us re-think other things in our life that affect us and our planet in a harmful way. Reading about billions (!) of tons of desposable diaper waste buried in our landfill made me switch to cloth diapers. It was a lot easier then I thought it would be, seriously!
Then the rest followed: no more plastic bags, only local and organic produce on our grocery shopping list, smaller cars, natural fiber clothing and so on, the list is getting longer every day.
Consider organics for yourself and your family. Not only you will feel good about yourself, you will also leave a cleaner, healthier world for your kids.

Cloth Diaper Care Know How

Cloth

Unbleached Cotton, Hemp, Hemp/Cotton, Bamboo Diapers:
Prior to use wash your new diapers a couple of times in hot water and a small amount of mild detergent, drying between each wash cycle. This will help make your diapers fully absorbent. Do not use fabric softeners, dryer sheets or detergents containing citrus oils as they will coat the diapers making them water repellent. To help keep your diapers disinfected naturally - add a few drops of Tea Tree Oil to your diaper pail and/or your washing machine. Do not use bleach. Keep your wet and dirty diapers in a covered diaper pail. Using a waterproof bag is an excellent option to help seal in odours between washings and make emptying the diaper pail more convenient.
Wool Covers:
To wash your wool covers simply soak them in cold water with a small amount of mild detergent for about 20-30 minutes. Then roll them up in a towel to get the excess water out and lay flat or hang to dry.You will need to lanolize your wool covers every 3-4 washes by adding a teaspoonful of melted lanoline (Lansinoh or PureLan by Medela) to soapy water and soaking them in it for about 10-20 minutes. Wool covers do not have to be washed at every change (unless soiled) so just air them when wet and they will smell fresh again. Wash every 10-14 days.
Polyester/fleece covers:
Hand or machine wash in warm water using a small amount of detergent. Hang to dry or tumble dry on medium heat.

Cloth diapering - know your options

When it comes to cloth diapering that little bum it helps to know your options:

Diapers
Flat Diapers - First cloth diapers were flat diapers, a rectangle of absorbent material folded around your baby’s bum.
Pre-Folded Diapers -Pre-Folded diapers (sometimes called Indian or Chinese pre-folds) are almost identical to flat diapers. Pre-folds are a multi-layered square of fabric, usually sewn into three panels with extra layers in the centre panel for added absorbency.
Contour Diapers - A contour diaper is a number of layers of absorbent fabric cut in bone or an hourglass shape. Some may also have elastic around the legs and waist for a better fit.
Fitted Diapers - Fitted diapers are a more advanced version of the contour diapers. The only difference is snaps or hook and loop (Velcro or Aplix) closures.
Pocket Diapers - Pocket diapers consist of two parts: a waterproof outer layer with an inner layer of fleece and an insert. The two layers are sewn together in such a way as to leave an opening at the back into which you put an insert of your choice.
All-In-Ones - All-In-Ones (AIOs) aim to provide the ultimate in convenience by providing everything you need in one step with no fasteners or separate covers required. Absorbent material and waterproof cover are built into one diaper. They are not as breathable as two-part diapering system and they tend to take longer to dry.
Diaper Covers
Vinyl, Vinyl-Coated Polyester, PVC - The diaper covers of our parents – these are made with harmful polyvinyl chloride, a plastic that may contain phthalates, an endocrine disruptor. They are not breathable or durable. Not a good choice.
Polyurethane Laminate (PUL) - PUL covers are made with knitted polyester or cotton that has been treated with polyurethane, making them waterproof but breathable and mildew resistant.
Wool - Wool is naturally anti-bacterial and can absorb up to one-third of its weight in moisture without feeling wet. A high-quality wool cover made from untreated wool is soft and not scratchy at all as many people might think. It also provides regulated body temperature keeping your baby cool in summer and warm in winter.
Fleece - An alternative to wool, fleece is made of 100% polyester, which wicks moisture away from baby’s skin. Fleece is machine washable, but can be prone to detergent build up, which may decrease performance.
Extras
Liners - A thin layer of soft flushable cellulosic fibre between baby’s bum and diaper to absorb any solid mess. Simply discard the soiled liner in the toilet and flush it away.
Doublers - An extra layer of soft, absorbent fabric added to a diaper to increase absorbency. They are perfect for naps, overnight or for babies who wet heavily.
Inserts - They are a wide variety of materials used in the pocket of a pocket diaper.
